There are currently no Greyhound adoption programs located in New York City, but several organizations serve the greater New York metropolitan area.

Each adoption program operates a little differently. Most are foster-based organizations rather than shelters with onsite kennels, so there may not be a location where you can simply visit and meet available dogs. The best first step is to review each program’s website carefully and follow its instructions for expressing interest in adopting a Greyhound, Galgo, or Greyhound mix.

These organizations rely heavily on volunteers, so it may take some time to receive a response to an email, phone call, or application. If you are seriously considering adoption, please be patient—and stay in touch. Finding the right dog and the right home can take time, but it is well worth the effort.

Connecticut Greyhound Adoption – CGA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all-volunteer organization whose mission is to find permanent, loving homes for retired racing greyhounds. To fulfill this mission, our goals are threefold:

  1. To inform and educate the public about the joys of greyhound adoption

  2. To identify suitable, caring homes for retired racers; and

  3. To provide pre- and post-adoption support to facilitate the transition from track to home

CGA endeavors to work cooperatively with the greyhound racing industry to help as many greyhounds as possible, including special needs dogs.

Grateful Greyhounds was founded in July of 1998 by Lisa Sallie.

In addition to Lisa, our Board consists of Sue McGuire, Laura Mackay.

We are very dedicated to helping find suitable and loving homes for ex-racing greyhounds and all sighthounds including Spanish galgos and podencos. We spend a good deal of time educating potential adopters at meet-n-greets, conducting homevisits and offering support post adoption through our talented team of Adoption Reps. GG prides itself on our relationships with other greyhound and sighthound organizations, working very closely with these groups in an effort to help more hounds. Think about it... doesn't that just make sense? We love the hounds and will do whatever it takes to help out those in need.

The GG Board is a group of individuals with a common interest, to help out ex-racers and all sight-hounds. We are volunteers and, more importantly, friends. We love what we do and look forward to many years of offering our expertise and support to new (and not so new) adopters. Thank you for your interest in the hounds!

Long Island Greyhound Connection, Inc is a 501 (C)(3) organization run exclusively by volunteers dedicated to educating the public about ex-racing greyhounds and finding homes for these deserving dogs.

Your needs, and the needs of the greyhound, are essential elements for The Long Island Greyhound Connection to consider in recommending if a Greyhound adoption is best for you and your family.

Once we receive your adoption application, a home visit to exchange information will be scheduled. At the home visit, you will receive the insight, knowledge and experience of a Greyhound adoption volunteer representative who will answer all of your questions.

When we reach the point of mutual decision to proceed with an adoption, we will help guide you along the way to make a smooth transition for you and your pet. Long Island Greyhound Connection is committed to providing each adopter with support and guidance to make the adoption process as informative yet as simple as possible.
